So we never did catch that mouse. We set out humane traps, and not-quite-as-humane traps, but no luck. Every couple of weeks, we would catch a glimpse of him, but he always avoided the traps.
But on Monday night, he made a mistake. He ran out from behind the toaster while B and I were both in the kitchen. He saw us, pivoted, and ran back. We immediately began building a barrier of cookie sheets to catch him. Knowing he was trapped, the mouse made a desperate escape attempt and jumped into the toaster.

We rejected the most obvious and tempting course of action and dumped him in the field at the end of our street.

But now I need a new toaster.
